Norman reign is over
SNP stalwart Norman Lawrie (pictured above) has stepped down from his role as Haddington branch secretary – and is also quitting Haddington Community Council.
The 76-year-old retired academic and mathematician had been a central figure in East Lothian SNP and the mainstay of the local party since he joined in 1992.
“My decision to stand down is partly due to age – I think it is time that someone younger took the job on,” he said.
“When I first joined the SNP branch the party was at a low ebb. But I am glad to be leaving it in a very healthy position.”
Mr Lawrie, of Newton Port, plans to spend more time with his wife, Caroline, as well as indulging in some of his other interests, including gardening.
Andrew Sharp, SNP Westminster Parliamentary candidate, paid tribute to Mr Lawrie’s work for the branch. He said: “Norman is a highly committed activist, as well as being a generous and consistent contributor to election funds.”
He is planning liaison officer for Haddington and District Community Council but does not intend to stand for re-election at next month’s polls.
“I’ve mixed feelings about standing down as I’ve enjoyed my time with the community council, but I’m having problems with my hearing,” he said.
Mr Lawrie – also a member of Haddington and District Amenity Society (HADAS) – has been replaced as local SNP branch secretary by John MacGill.
