Pledge made to help residents trapped by debt
THE Prestonpans branch of Christians against Poverty (CAP) has called on local people who are struggling with money problems to contact them.
Manager Tina Mackinnon made the plea after figures issued by the charity showed that almost a third of British people in debt consider suicide or have suicidal thoughts before seeking help.
She said: “The good news is that we’re here to help anyone who feels trapped by debt.
“We cannot explain the relief that we see on clients’ faces when they realise that their problems are not too big to overcome, and we aim to offer hope to those in desperation.”
The CAP centre, based at St Andrew’s Church in West Loan, opened almost two years ago and is helping many clients become debt free by using repayment plans and the use of an insolvency practioner for those facing legal proceedings.
Ms Mackinnon pointed out that any advice given was free and available to all local people, regardless of whether or not they were Christians.
“No-one is beyond help,” she said.
“We’re aware that so many more in the local community still live under the shadow of debt and they shouldn’t be embarrassed to seek assistance.”
