Headteacher child porn allegations
A HEADTEACHER facing child pornography charges has been suspended.
Whitecraig Primary School headteacher Mark Melville, 47, appeared in private at Haddington Sheriff Court on Wednesday.
Between October 11, 2004 and March 13, 2008, it is alleged that he had various indecent photographs of children at his home at Muirfield Station, Gullane.
It also alleged that he did take, or permit to be taken, various indecent photographs of children over a two-year period, between 2005 and 2007.
Mr Melville, who appeared on petition before Sheriff Alan Miller, made no plea or declaration and the case was committed for further examination.
Bail was granted on the condition that he does not have any contact with, or be in the presence of, any persons under the age of 16, without adult supervision.
He is also forbidden from accessing the internet, or any e-mail system.
An East Lothian Council spokeswoman confirmed that Mr Melville has been suspended from his job, pending a police investigation.
The spokeswoman added: “As this is a matter of police confidentiality, I cannot comment further.
“We are concentrating on making sure that this situation creates a minimum of disturbance for the lives of pupils and parents.”
Mr Melville took over the post of headteacher in November last year, after a two-year stint as depute headteacher. He has previously taught at Gullane Primary School.
