Shocked at kids playing football in historic graveyard

A COMMUNITY figurehead has expressed her “shock” at new reports of youngsters playing football in St Martin’s Church graveyard.

Haddington and District Community Council heard last Tuesday night that police had received complaints over kickabouts in the cemetery.

The news brought a strong reaction from Jan Wilson, who chairs the watchdog group.

She said: “It has been happening on and off over a period of time.

Teenagers have been congregating there to play football on the open ground at Whittingehame Drive and it seems that some have taken to using the graveyard as an alternative football pitch.

“I would be very concerned and shocked if these latest reports are true. A graveyard is hallowed ground and no-one wants to see the graves of their parents or loved ones desecrated.

“There is also a danger to these youngsters from the possibility of falling headstones, so it is in everyone’s best interests if they confine their football to the park.”
