Celebrating 100 years of the Prestoungrange Gothenburg

THE Prestoungrange Gothenburg is urging residents to help celebrate its centenary year.

Next Friday (March 28, from noon) sees a showing of archive films dating back to the early 1920s, and an exhibition of photographs.

Anyone willing to lend interesting photos of Prestonpans from the first half of the last century should hand them in to the Goth.

Anne Taylor, general manager of the Gothenburg, said: “This is one of several events we are staging this year to celebrate the pub’s centenary.

“It’s exciting to think that we are involved in something that has such a long tradition in the town and I know there are people around with very fond memories of the place. You never know, we might even find someone who remembers it opening in 1908.”

When it was built in 1908, the Goth was part of an experiment in temperance and philanthropy. Its owners wanted to encourage miners and other workers to spend their money on soft drinks and food, not just alcohol, and to bring their families along. Most of the profits went to create other leisure facilities in the community.

The inspiration came from the city of Gothenburg, where they pioneered licensing, and taxed alcohol sales for the benefit of the community.

When the Goth was taken and restored over eight years ago, these old principles were re-instated.

Profits above five per cent go to arts projects in the town, and it is only one of three pubs in Scotland that still contribute to their communities in this way.

Over the coming months there will be several musical evenings, each one celebrating a different decade of the 20th century.
