Elderly couple trapped after car ‘blown over’ in winds
AN elderly couple escaped with minor injuries despite being trapped in their badly-damaged car following a freak weather accident in Aberlady.
They were travelling on Sea Wynd at 2.20pm on Tuesday when the 86-year-old male driver lost control of their Volkswagen Fox in the high wind.
A police spokesman said: “The car swerved to the nearside where it collided with a parked Ford Ka and was then blown over onto its side, trapping the driver and passenger inside the car.”
Two Haddington fire crews assisted in freeing the driver, and his 85-year-old wife, from North Berwick. They were then taken by ambulance to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment to minor injuries.
Their car was extensively damaged and the road was closed until the wreckage was cleared at 4pm.
On Monday, high winds were responsible for two accidents on the A1 at East Linton.
At 5pm, the roof was blown off a lorry travelling northbound on the bridge over the River Tyne.
Twenty minutes later, an articulated lorry was blown onto its side at the same location.
Neither driver was injured in the incidents.
