CCTV success at last
CCTV cameras are to be installed at one of the worst areas for anti-social behaviour in Cockenzie and Port Seton.
The burgh will share a fund of £272,000 with Prestonpans and Dunbar, allocated to help tackle the problem of rowdy youths.
The community council warmly welcomed news of CCTV provision, earmarked for the next financial year, from April.
Isobel Black, who recently stepped down as council chairman, said she was still awaiting official confirmation from East Lothian Council, but was pleased at the news.
“It is something we have wanted for a long time,” she said.
“We have been pursuing this for as long as I can remember, certainly before my time on the community council.
“Stuart Currie, the local councillor, has been very supportive on this issue on our behalf over the past couple of years and we are grateful to him for this now happening.”
It was too early to say where the cameras would be sited or what the cost might be.
“We have our own views on where they should go,” she said. “But we will obviously have to speak to the police and hear their views on the issue.
“I’m sure that they will be pleased as well at the prospect of cameras being sited here as they have also been asking for them.”
The community council would be raising the matter at their next meeting with police, she said.
A spokeswoman for East Lothian Council said: “There is a budget of £272,000 for the CCTV expansion programme and the three proposed projects are at Port Seton, Prestonpans and Dunbar.
“A period of consultation will take place with the police and community council to get ideas of where they think would be most appropriate for the cameras.”
