Bidding for arts festival
FAMILIES and town traders have been urged to support a bid to establish an arts festival in Musselburgh, to coincide with the capital’s summer event.
A “brain storming” session is planned for February when comminity councillors will meet businesses people.
Vice-chairman of Musselburgh and Inveresk Community Council, Alan Hay, is spearheading the bid to latch on to the success of Edinburgh’s world famous arts festival by staging a smaller scale event simultaneously in the town.
Various suggestions so far include a children’s book festival, an art and photography display and an event to showcase local bands.
Mr Hay is convinced that promoting the Honest Toun at the height of Edinburgh’s tourist season could bring great rewards.
“Because we are on the fringe of Edinburgh there’s no reason not to tap into its success,” he said.
“I want people to come to Musselburgh and spend their money here. It would benefit all the local businesses and may help to regenerate the High Street which is beginning to look a bit tired.
“We need local people to support this initiative and local businesses to get involved. It will not be on a grand scale this year but I want to us to put our toes in and test the water.”
Mr Hay hopes to team up with Queen Margaret University to take advantage of their resources, event management experience and arts facilities.
“QMU have the expertise, resources and contacts to make this a success,” he said.
Suggestions can be left at the Brunton Hall c/o Alan Hay.
