Drink-drive arrests down
POLICE arrested a total of 24 motorists in East and Midlothian for drink or drug driving during the festive period.
The figures for ‘E’ Division of Lothian and Borders Police account for 18 per cent of the 133 arrests made across the entire force area during a four-week national campaign by the Association of Chief Police Officers Scotland (ACPOS).
They represent a slight decrease on the figures for last year’s campaign, when 153 drivers were arrested.
Some 84 per cent of offenders were male, with 49 per cent in the 26-55 age group.
Most offenders (57 per cent) were caught between 9pm and 3am, followed by 3am to 7am (23 per cent). A further 15 per cent were caught between noon and 9pm.
The ACPOS campaign saw 839 drivers arrested for numerous drink and drug driving offences across Scotland.
Inspector Jill Kerr, who co-ordinated the campaign locally, said that although the numbers of people arrested were down on last year, there was little cause for celebration.
“While there has been a slight decrease in the numbers of people arrested in comparison to last year’s campaign, it is nevertheless disappointing that so many people have made the foolhardy decision to drink and drive,” she added.
“People have been warned time and time again of the potentially devastating consequences of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs, but it appears that the message continues to be ignored by a stupid minority.
“Although the festive campaign is now at an end, we will continue our efforts to make the roads as safe as possible by tracking down offenders.”
