Kids' play room window shot at

Printer Print Article

A CHILDREN’S play room window was fired at in one of two airgun attacks on homes in North Berwick at the weekend.

Police have condemned the late-night shootings in York Road and Links Road and launched an urgent appeal for information.

Community policeman, PC Allan Walker, said: “We want to hear from anyone who saw any suspicious activity, or vehicles, in the York Road and Links Road area on the evenings in question.

“These were obviously very reckless acts that could have resulted in serious injury.”

A high-powered air rifle, thought to be of .22 calibre, was used in the attacks, which both occurred between 9.30pm and 9.45pm.

The properties appear to have been randomly targeted by the suspects, who were possibly travelling in a car.

In the first incident, on Saturday, a retired couple escaped injury when the living room window of their flat in York Road was damaged.

They had been watching television when a pellet cracked the outer pane of glass, but failed to penetrate the secondary pane close to where they were sitting. The cost of replacing the glass is estimated to be around £280.

One of the victims, who did not want to be identified, said: “At first we didn’t know what had happened. There was a clatter and I thought it might be children dropping something in the upstairs flat.

“Then my wife saw there was a crack in the window. I went outside to investigate and heard a car driving off.

“We are shocked and concerned that this has happened.”

The second incident occurred on Sunday, when an airgun pellet penetrated the single-paned window of a children’s playroom at a house in Links Road. No-one was in the room at the time.

Again, householders heard a vehicle driving off seconds after the impact.

The shootings came less than a month after an airgun attack on a motorist at the A1’s Bankton junction flyover near Tranent.

The van driver escaped unhurt in the December 10 incident when a gang of teenagers forced him to slow to crawl then fired an airgun, cracking the vehicles front windscreen.

Anyone with information on the North Berwick attacks should phone PC Walker on 01620 893585.
