Novice set to fly solo over Gullane

FUNDRAISER Sally-Anne Hunter is keeping supporters abreast of her campaign to fly solo over her home village – and is no longer “petrified” at the prospect!

Her campaign to raise money for breast cancer research has also received a fantastic £2,000 boost.

The mother-of-two has completed 10 microlight flying lessons with Gordon Douglas at the East of Scotland Microlight Club at East Fortune airfield since joining national fundraising group Booby Birds earlier this year.

Launched last November, the group is made up of 20 businesswomen from throughout Scotland, 19 of whom took part in a skydive from 10,000ft above St Andrews on September 8.

Sally-Anne, of Muirfield Station, Gullane, suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and was unable to take part in the skydive.

So she decided to soar through the skies in another fashion to help her fellow Booby Birds reach their target of £400,000 for breast cancer care and research.

She told the Courier: “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and I decided on my birthday that I was definitely going ahead with it.

“I was absolutely petrified when I started my lessons but am really enjoying myself now and can’t wait to get up there.”

The events director reckons she is roughly 10 lessons away from completing the challenge, which will see her fly thousands of feet high over Gullane, and is aiming to take flight early next year.

Each Booby Bird has to contribute £20,000 in order to help reach the group’s massive fundraising target.

And dozens of women turned out to support Sally-Anne’s efforts at a girls’ gala night on November 17 at Gullane village hall.

Refreshments were provided by a team of “Booby Buddies” while award-winning comedienne Susan Calman entertained guests.

“To see this event come together so quickly and reach its target of £2,000 is fantastic,” said novice flyer Sally-Anne.

“I would like to thank everyone who supported us and donated their time, money, services and expertise.

“And a special mention goes to Pam Chade, Jackie Mackie, Lorna Scott and Adria Stubbs who helped so much with the organisation of the event!”
