Artist Ellie among Euro elite

THE artistic talents of a county school pupil have been recognised by the European Union.

Bureaucrats in Brussels received hundreds of entries from youngsters throughout Europe in the EU’s Mini-Chefs poster design competition, aimed at promoting healthy eating among young people.

And Yester Primary School’s Ellie Thomson did Scotland proud by claiming a top 10 place in the challenge thanks to her attractive poster (see picture right).

Class teacher Fiona Edwards said: “All the children had a wonderful time designing their posters and Ellie was very pleased to get so far and her mother was also absolutely delighted.”

Ellie, 9, of Gifford, was put forward for the competition after winning a school contest with her poster earlier this year.

Although she didn’t receive a prize from the EU – the Romanian winner and her class were all invited to Brussels – Ellie’s creation is on display on the EU website: http://eu.mini-chefs.eu/

The competition was held to help promote yesterday’s (Thursday’s) European Day of Healthy Food and Cooking.

The special day was due to see Ellie being presented with a cookery book by staff at the Gifford school in recognition of her achievement.

Pupils were also to enjoy a cookery demonstration of South African Food by Peter McQuade, of Garvald Inn, and a Finnish school lunch, as part of a food fair marking European Day of Healthy Food and Cooking.

Also at Yester, 87 pupils from primary six and seven were honing their dramatic skills this week in preparation for their forthcoming musical production, Tin Pan Ali, a reworking of the classic tale of Arabian peasant Ali Baba.

Musselburgh’s Brunton Theatre has supplied the young thespians with lighting equipment and a production team from East Lothian Council’s arts service are also helping out.

Headteacher Dorothy Hilsley is in the director’s chair for the production.

She said: “This has allowed the children a brilliant opportunity and working with partners in the arts has helped us develop this project in ways we could never have managed on her own.”

The show will open at the primary school on Wednesday and runs for three nights.
