The gift of life... 300 times over
FOUR heroes have been honoured for saving lives – after donating an incredible 75 pints of blood each.
David Richardson, Iain Currie, George Peacock and George West were honoured at the Edinburgh Donor Awards, organised by the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Association.
All four received a Caithness Glass paperweight at the ceremony held in the Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh.
A donor for the past 40 years, David Richardson, 60, of Carlaverock Crescent, Tranent, made his 75th donation at the donor centre in Lauriston Place, Edinburgh, last year.
A former chief of East Lothian fire services, he said: “When you’re at the sharper end of the knife, as I once was, you see how people can really help by giving blood. The fact is that it is a worthwhile cause and it is needed.”
His wife Mary, a fellow blood donor, attended the ceremony.
Father-of-two Iain Currie, of Eskview Avenue, Musselburgh began giving blood at the age of 18.
Now 50 years old, he said: “I give blood about three times per year and I have been doing so since I started. I am just happy to help when I can.”
Haddington duo George Peacock and George West were also honoured.
Vincent Mooney, Edinburgh donor services manager, added: “Every donation can be split into three separate parts, helping to save or improve the lives of three different people.
“On behalf of everyone who has received these donors’ blood, I’d like to say a very big thank you.”
