Burgh cricketers show they can stand the heat
Musselburgh’s first XI made the most of the hot weather and dry wicket on Saturday, scoring 277-9 off a hapless Old Contemptibles attack.
And the victory keeps Burgh on course for an end of season league title showdown with Broomhall CC as they step up the heat going into the final hurdle.
Losing the toss and batting first, Burgh suffered an early setback with the loss of Tucker for 10 but Dale and Khurshid took the attack to their hosts, and kept the run rate above four per over before Khurshid was trapped for an LBW on 14.
Debutant Cross was next in and he crafted his way to 22 before falling to DeBrincat with the Burgh 100 in sight.
Burton and Dale then ensured this landmark was reached, and both batsmen were finding the boundary with ease from the lacklustre bowlers.
Dale brought up his first league 50 of the season in the 31st over of the game, but did not survive long after reaching his milestone as DeBrincat bowled him for 53.
But Burgh continued to score well, with Burton recording an excellent 51 before edging behind to leave Burgh 186 for five.
Verma and Ahmed now accelerated and added an incredible 69 runs in only seven overs as Burgh effortlessly eased past the 200 mark.
The tail did not add much after Ahmed departed for 18, but Verma hit the last ball of the innings for a six to finish unbeaten on 70.
Burgh’s total of 277-9 was an excellent one, which left their hosts with the task of scoring at a rate of six per over in their reply.
Faced with such a large total, the Old Contemptibles needed a good start, but with Lomax and Smith both out before the score reached 20, the task became almost impossible.
Several middle order batsmen started innings but were unable to push on and Ross and Marriot both reached the 30s before exiting the wicket.
With the total looking safe, Verma opted to rest himself to rotate his bowlers and the only other Musselburgh player who didn’t bowl was the wicket keeper Macdonald.
Allen with 2-12 from eight and Khurshid with 2-16 from eight returned the best figures, but Khalid and Burton also bowled in some good spells.
The home innings went the distance as the hosts finished on 200-9, giving Musselburgh a win by a total of 77 runs.
The second XI completed a good weekend for the Burgh, defeating a Kismet second XI by five wickets at Lewisvale.
An excellent unbeaten 61 from Vik Kumar was the backbone of the Burgh innings, adding to his 2-10 with the ball.
Young Ashi Tufail returned the best home bowling figures, with 3-22 from seven overs.
