Laura’s eco-friendly cuppa
YOU don’t have to be Superman to save the planet – and Macmerry WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) volunteer, Laura Hutton (left), is hoping to tell you how.
Laura, 31, of McIntyre Lane, has recently become an official volunteer for the charity and is offering local groups the opportunity to have her as a guest speaker to raise awareness of their climate change programmes.
She is looking for community groups in East Lothian to give talks to regarding the work of WWF, or to speak specifically about climate change, or the size of our ecological footprint.
The ecological footprint is basically how many planets would be needed to sustain our lifestyle if we all lived the way we do in Scotland.
Laura is urging any groups wishing to have her present a talk at their regular meetings to chat over how individuals can do more to save energy and resources, which can help the environment and local communities.
She said:“I’ve been a supporter of WWF for years now and I’ve always given money but never time, so this is my way of making a difference.
“I would like to speak to local groups such as women’s institutes, community councils, church groups or any group, to tell them what things they can do to help the environment.
“Simple things like filling our kettles with only enough water for our cups of tea could help power all of the street lamps in the UK, as that’s how much power is used when everyone boils a kettle.
“The talks are quite informal and very informative and shows businesses and individuals how easy it is to change our habits and make a big difference.”
The talks are intended for groups of 20 or more, and can be tailored to last from 20 minutes to hour and a half.
For information on how to book a talk with Laura, contact Julie Stoneman on 01350 728223.
