Residents restless
DIRLETON residents have slammed plans for new luxury houses on former church property as out of step with the area, which is a conservation village.
Cala Homes intend to build nine houses at Manse Road, with work starting shortly.
Nigel Bruce, of Dirleton Village Association told the Courier: “Quite a lot of people are not too happy about that. One objection is the houses will be quite densely built in a small space. People are unhappy about the density and the height.
“They are worried they won’t be appropriate in a conservation village.”
He said the Association had contacted the East Lothian Council to register its opposition.
However, the council said that objections were a bit late, as planning consent had been granted for the houses on 23rd June.
Dirleton councillor Gilbert Meikle said he was “satisfied” that the homes comply with the local plan and development brief. “I would never allow anything to pass that didn’t fit into the area,” he said.
Meanwhile, Cala Homes insisted the houses would be entirely in keeping with the picturesque surroundings of Dirleton. A spokeswoman described them as “bespoke homes,” which accorded with council planning restrictions. She said: “Cala is delighted to have been granted planning permission by East Lothian Council to build nine houses at Manse Road, Dirleton.
“The planning consent complies with the development brief prepared by East Lothian Council for the site and traditional external materials will be used as appropriate in a conservation area such as Manse Road, Dirleton.
“Cala has considerable experience in developing sensitively in conservation areas. Our development at Inveresk conservation village was voted ‘Best Executive Development in Britain’ for 2000.”
